Each year on the last school day before Christmas/Holiday Break, we host a Festive Christmas Lunch. Each middle school student receives a gift-wrapped novel of their choice and a stocking filled with fun items from chapstick to pencils to mittens, etc. This is one of the best days in their Holiday season celebration. The goal is to honor them as deserving young people who are working in hard in school to make a big change for themselves and their families and to provide a novel of their choice so they have a book to read over the two-week break.

The goal of the project is to gift wrap 80 books (provided) in holiday gift wrap with a special name tag for the student.

Our students are so happy when they see receive their books!

Seattle Nativity School serves a community of underserved students with a household income average of $30,000 for a family of four. Our program focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Our program includes graduate support through high school and college. We currently have 36 graduates in 2- and 4- year colleges, and technical schools as first generation students. It takes one generation to change chronic poverty.

When children select a new Page Ahead book to keep for their very own they write their name on a bookplate sticker and affix it to the inside cover. Bookplate stickers come in rolls of 1,000 and need to be rolled out and cut into strips of 12 stickers. The end result of this volunteer activity is bookplates that are easy for Page Ahead to ship to hundreds of schools in Washington State for teachers to distribute to their students for our spring book fairs. When children select their (free to them) new books, putting their name in it gives them ownership and gets them excited about reading their new books. This opportunity is repeatable! Page Ahead serves over 203 school sites across Washington State, USA.

Max volunteers: up to 50 Micro-Volunteers at a time.
In-person project ONLY, at your office in the greater Seattle/Redmond area.

The project takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours max. Page Ahead provides all the supplies and materials needed. We bring the project to you!

This opportunity is repeatable. We serve more than 20,000 kids in need living in Washington State. We will need a lot of bookplate packets made for the kids we serve.

#Give2023

Open: October 1 - 31, 2023. Please email Stacey (SLANE@PAGEAHEAD.ORG) to schedule your preferred day/time you would like us to come to you with the project!

Before the pandemic, volunteers would read aloud to children as they sat in the waiting rooms of their pediatricians, awaiting their well-child visits. Though that isn't possible for the time being, our volunteers have still been able to reach families by recording virtual read aloud sessions from the safety of their own homes.

To continue this vital service, we are searching for additional volunteers to record themselves reading children's books for us to share on our website and social media channels. Bilingual readers and diverse books are a plus!

Volunteers will be required to have their own books, either physical books or e-books. The children in our program are 0-5 years old so we require the books to be suitable for that age range. Volunteers will record themselves reading the book and we will share those recordings with our families.

Our adult students come from all over the worldVenezuela to Ukraine, Burma to Mexicoand a few are homegrown, too. They all have one thing in common: they want to learn to speak, read, or write English better.

Our tutors come from our community and they have varied backgrounds too! Lawyers, mechanics, nurses, educators of all kinds, stay-at-home parents, and more join together with patience and a commitment to making a difference to support students.

These two groups of people come together through the Literacy Council. We meet with the students to determine their English level and create their learning plan. We train our tutors and share resources and techniques for them to work well with students. Then, we match our learning pairs based on their schedules. The tutors are volunteers and the 1-on-1 tutoring is offered free of charge.

How can you help?
You can become a tutor! With just one hour a week, you can work with a student and help them establish skills that will help them for the rest of their life. Visit our website to apply online to become a volunteer tutor at https://familyresourcesheboygan.org/volunteer-as-a-tutor/
