This project aims to monitor the presence and movement of flora and fauna in the Blue Mountains and provide long-term records of changes that may reflect influences such as climate change and urban development. Our volunteer citizen scientists service camera trap installations to capture movements of fauna in real-time as well as take manual photographs in fixed locations to capture long-term changes to flora and ecosystems.
Taking and collecting these images involves short, pleasant walks into the bush (the urban-bushland interface) along easy walking tracks, involving volunteer groups of 2-6 people.
These images are collected each month and uploaded to the BMWHI database. All images are then codified and analysed by our research team, then uploaded to the Atlas of Living Australia database using the BioCollect tool designed for citizen science projects.

Forest Fire Risk Prevention Derivatives in Northern California
Bobby Fishkin, lead author
In 2018, Sacramento was named the "the Most Polluted City on Earth" due to "smoke from Camp Fire," This proposal aims to prevent that from happening again through adopting a systemic approach and collaborating with stakeholders to actively prevent future such events. The insurance industry, along with institutional chief risk officers, have begun to recognize the importance of moving from "loss compensation to loss prevention."
CrowdDoing and Project Heather propose launching a prevention derivative with two new stakeholders: (a) contingent payers who pay in proportion to the reduction in risk, and (b) impact investors who finance social innovations in which their return is similarly proportional to the reduction in risk. It will build on existing precedents for contingent contracts involving social- innovation-based risk prevention.
Insurance Broker Volunteer, Forest Fire Prevention Derivatives, CrowdDoing A spectrum of forest fire risk prevention approaches are available: from creative new social innovations to well-established interventions. The forest fire risk prevention derivative would first survey existing forest fire prevention interventions in Greater Sacramento with an eye towards which ones might be suitable to support and expand. It would then review global social innovations that might be relevant to Northern California to determine which to replicate. Entities involved in risk management and risk securitisation, from insurers to reinsurers to retrocessionaires, ought to welcome the chance to share liability proportionally through a commons of prevention innovations. The prevention derivative can expand as more institutions and individuals join as contingent payers and impact investors in order prevent a larger portion of collective risk. Payments by private and public institutions to support prevention derivatives can be in-kind, through services, and/or financial. With your help the EcoCentre removes and researches litter washed up on the Bay’s beaches. As litter is a major cause of death for our resident wildlife (like sea birds, dolphins and seals) it is imperative that we research ways to reduce it.Help the Baykeeper collect data that contributes to healthier waterways and habitats for our unique biodiversity and provide solid evidence to inform litter strategies.
Depending on the weather and tides, we may also have time for a Shoreline Shell Survey. You will collect shells on the beach, identify them, record their characteristics and learn about the important role of molluscs (shellfish) in the Bay ecosystem. The data collected will be used to record long-term changes in population, species diversity, climate change and water quality.
