KNOX will hold a volunteer event to do a general clean-up of our site. This will include weeding our farm and herb garden and sprucing up our grounds. This event will support KNOX's urban incubator farm program, which provides beginning farmers with the land, training, and connections to scale up their production and launch their own farming businesses. Our farmers sell their produce at 5 farmers markets throughout the city, including our new Frog Hollow Farmers Market at KNOX! We can accommodate up to 20 volunteers for this event. Volunteers do not need to bring any tools. We recommend wearing sneakers, layers, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Bathrooms are available in the KNOX building. We will provide light snacks and water for volunteers. If the event needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather, we will notify volunteers and reschedule.

Welcome to VIDEA’s 10th Global Solidarity Challenge!

Are you ready for a challenge: one that will test your resilience, compassion, community networks and vigour? VIDEA is about to put your skills to the test through our annual fundraising event, the

Global Solidarity Challenge:

We will be celebrating all things culture and connecting our challenges with either our own culture or aspects of cultures that we appreciate or have learned from.

We are dividing into four teams to represent how culture is representative in our lives:

Connection to the Land: Development is often achieve at the expense of the land. It is also regularly met with resistance by those who have differing perspectives of what it means to live on, interact with, or steward the land. Land defenders - often at the expense of their personal safety – resist ongoing colonization and exploitation of the land.

Food and Water: Come eat with us! For the whole week we will be exploring traditional food systems and dishes of the WS'ANEC' (Saanich), Lekwungen (Songhees), Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and T'Sou-ke (Sooke) Nations. Share what Indigenous foods are in your area!

Languages: Language connects us! Even before we can speak our first words, we experiment with all the sounds we know to communicate. Language also helps us make sense of and understand the world around us - connecting with our hearts and minds.

Music, Dance and the Arts : Music and Dance are important components of any culture around the world! They are languages in themselves, and are a way to communicate messages, feelings, and stories among people and between generations.

For one week, we will demonstrate just what standing in solidarity can look like. Each team will use the Global Solidarity week to show solidarity in their own unique way and to raise funds to help support VIDEA’s education, gender, and poverty reduction programmes in Canada and overseas. Learn more about these programs at the bottom of this page, or check out VIDEA’s website for more details!

Are you in? Want to join? It’s easy – just follow these steps!

https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/VIDEA/p2p/GSC2019/

Step 1: Sign up and join a team! Follow the ‘Sign in’ link in the top right corner, then click ‘Create an Account’. Once you are logged into the CanadaHelps system, return to the GSC page, find the ‘Teams’ tab and join the team of your choice! Once you have selected a team, you will be prompted to create and customize your personal challenge page.

Step 2: Need challenge ideas? Here are a few to get you started, but feel free to get creative!

- Curb a consumption! Live on 10L of water a day, go without electricity, or only eat stable food items.
- Live off of $1.25 a day! Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population, more than 3 billion people, live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty- less than $1.25 a day.
- Create zero food waste. Canadians waste $31 billion worth of food every year, and 47% of that is wasted at home!In North America, over 30% of fruits and vegetables are rejected by supermarkets because they aren’t attractive enough for consumers. Or you can go all out and do the Zero Waste Challenge! Recycle, reuse, compost, and reduce consumption in an attempt to limit waste to 5L in a week, or none at all if you really want to challenge yourself!- In 2012, the world generated 2.6 trillion pounds of garbage; the weight of roughly 7,000 Empire State Buildings.
- Live in silence for a predetermined amount of time.

So, why is solidarity important? The Global Solidarity Challenge allows VIDEA to continue to support development projects like these ones:

Shared Wisdom: Raised Voices - 8 youth leaders from Lil'wat Nation, Maskwacis, Whitehorse and Victoria are engaged in a two year leadership project with the aim of strengthening local and global communities and providing youth with the opportunity to be leaders in addressing violence against women and girls in their home communities through building their capacity and leadership skills;

Youth Internship Programmes – VIDEA is proud to offer 140 opportunities for Indigenous youth to participate in the International Aboriginal Youth Internship programme over the next 5 years, providing support and solidarity to overseas partners in Uganda, Zambia, and South Africa;

Public engagement – every year VIDEA delivers a range of public engagement projects across BC that help community members to better understand global issues and to figure out how to make a difference. Through activities during International Development Week, supporting Indigenous initiatives, the Fair Trade Fair, and many more, thousands of Canadians gain the opportunity to volunteer, take part, learn more, and become more active global citizens;

Education – VIDEA has delivered a vibrant education programme for 40 years! Every year VIDEA provides opportunities for students and youth to learn about global issues through the development of new resources and learning opportunities. We provide mentorship and opportunities for volunteers, interns and practicum students to gain the experience they need to pursue careers in international development and social justice areas, and support to teachers and educators looking to integrate global issues into their learning experience;

Indigenous Knowledge – through this innovative programme Indigenous youth, Elders, and community members in Canada and in the south and east African countries that we work in are connected and better able to address the issues that they face in solidarity and by sharing knowledge passed down and reclaimed.

Trees Matter is in need of several volunteers to help with distributing 2,000 desert-adapted shade trees to Valley residents! Over the course of the summer months, SRP participants attended tree care workshops, and selected 2 shade trees that they would receive once the weather was more suitable for planting.
