Pick-a-Pear-a-thon is Urban Abundance's biggest harvest event and fundraiser of the year. With two orchards that have about 500 Bartlett pear trees between them that all ripen at the same time, we will be working night and day to harvest as much fruit as possible over two weeks to donate to Clark County Food Bank, and we need all the man-power we can get!

Last year, with the help of our volunteers, we donated 9,000 pounds of fresh fruit to the food bank in these two weeks! All volunteers get to take Bartlett pears home with them after the event, and it's a great way to spend a day out in nature in a beautiful pear orchard.

These harvest events are free, family friendly, and a great opportunity for companies looking to do a community-service day with their employees. Come one come all!

Opportunity Details

Volunteering at a Saturday Morning Enrichment Program (SMEP) is a great way to support the academic enrichment of young learners in Newburgh.

The program runs every Saturday morning from 8:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M.

There are a variety of roles which range from working directly with youth within the classroom to supporting NAUC staff facilitating the program that day. Please review the tasks listed below and sign up for the opportunity that is for you!

Volunteering with AWC provides exciting opportunities to assist our dedicated team in the field. Volunteering opportunities exist across a broad range of activities. These can range from scientific surveys (involving activities such as setting up and clearing traps, survey work and walking transects), land management (weeding, fence maintenance, clearing tracks) and general sanctuary maintenance (painting, repairs).

Opportunity Details

Associates from Kohls Oviedo location will join the Zoo on July 19th, 2019 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. All volunteers must Kohls associates. Please wear clothing that can get dirty, closed-toe shoes, and a water bottle.

Any volunteer who serves the duration of the service activity will receive free admittance into the Zoo afterwards.

Opportunity Details

Discovery Days is our most important community event and fundraiser. Event hours are Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18 & 19 from noon until 4 PM. Volunteers are mainly needed to help serve food items such as roasted corn, brats, ice cream and popcorn. We use the ticket method so volunteers will not need to handle money. Volunteers may also be needed to help with parking, admissions, gift shop sales and kids activities. The event is expected to bring in hundreds of visitors to the farm.

Proceeds from the event directly support the Eco-Justice Center of Racine, a 15-acre, renewable energy teaching farm and home to alpacas, chickens, goats and more. Our goal is to connect kids (and adults!) to nature and nutrition. In collaboration with the Racine Unified School District, Eco-J hosts first graders for a Growing Healthy field trips. We teach nutrition and food sourcing to numerous school groups and to our summer ecology camp participants. We also offer internships to college students interested in learning organic farming methods.

Fiber from the alpacas is used for spinning, weaving, knitting, and felting; manure from the alpacas, goats, rabbits, chickens, geese, and ducks is composted and used in the organic gardens. Our bees pollinate both wild plants and garden crops. We grow about 50 varieties of fruits and veggies using organic methods and extra produce is shared with those in need through Racine's food pantries.

Renewable energy features include solar hot water, solar electric, geo-thermal heating and cooling, and wind electric from our 10Kw wind turbine. Currently, 50% of our electrical use is generated from the solar panels and wind turbine.

Through leadership and education, the Eco-Justice Center’s mission is to work for justice, healing, and right relationships among all Creation. It is a non-profit 501-C3 organization.

Opportunity Details

During the summer our pastures flood which can cause medical issues for the animals hooves and feet. We need to create drainage ditches through out the sanctuary to alleviate the flooding. We are in need of people to help dig the ditches. Ideally we would like to have 10 or more people to complete the project quicker.

Available shifts will be between 8am-3pm both Friday and Saturday, July 19th and 20th, 2019. When signing up please indicate if you wish to volunteer for one or both days and how many hours (approximate time) you are able to help.

Please wear closed in shoes and bring hats, gloves and snacks. We will provide water and sunscreen.

Conduct mock interviews for a day with school students. Join a group of business volunteers assisting students to experience a one to one interview. Provide 10 minutes personal feedback for each candidate. Each student can choose from one of five business roles to be interviewed for.
