TO POTENTIAL CORPORATE SPONSORS:Stemming from the desire to give back to the Community we live in and support the causes which have impacted the lives of so many we know, even more we don’t know, a passionate number of Marlboro’s MVP Softball League players have banned together to create the 2019 Inaugural Wiffle Ball Classic. An event which will create continued awareness and benefit the programs of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Autism Speaks. Foundations which are tremendous advocacy organizations sponsoring research, awareness and outreach activities to those affected and their families. Additionally, funds raised will also assist the Marlboro Youth Baseball and Softball Association in maintaining its field complex and promoting its programs. The Founders of the Wiffle Ball Classic expect to continue this as an annual event, designating other meaningful causes to assist.
The Wiffle Ball Classic event takes the familiar wiffle ball game we all played as kids and arranges its participants into Pre-Teen; Co-Ed; Woman’s; and Men’s divisions, both in competitive and non-competitive formats. Teams consist of 5-7 players, and games are played in standardized dimensions, with pitching, fielding, and absent the need for base running. Essentially an offensive automatic format, with hits falling safely into zones allotted for singles, doubles, triples and home-runs. This seamlessly evens the playing field to cross many age groups, allowing for multi-generational teams.
The Marlboro MVP Softball League, founded nearly 3 decades ago, is a 30 and over, Men’s League, with 150 participants spread across ten teams. Its members are residents of many towns in Monmouth and Middlesex counties of NJ, along with players residing and travelling from the five boroughs of NYC. Its players stretch from 30-75 years of age, and it prides itself on being more than a vehicle to play softball. Rather a collaborate fraternity of individuals who form lifetime friendships and solidify family bonds. Who comes to the aid of those in need, in many different forms, outwardly or quietly, but always effectively and with great passion and discretion. To learn more about our league, please access our website at mvpsoftball.com.
We would love to have you participate in our event, perhaps provide sponsorship funds, making it a successful and enjoyable day for all involved, and the programs we are supporting.
Volunteers will assist with registration, field coordination, concession stand sales, clean up, parking lot coordination, vendor assistance, arcade games coordination

Hero Harbor is a minority, disabled veteran-owned nonprofit serving military and first responders. September 14th, along with the Deland American Legion Post 6, we'll host a Tribute to Heroes fundraising event. The goal is to honor our Heroes, spotlight the history of the American Legion's veteran support, and bridge the knowledge gap between civilians and the Heroes who serve them.No amount of separations classes or exit interviews can prepare most of us for taking off that uniform. Regardless of your job or how long you served, it takes time to feel comfortable again once you walk away from your Hero post for the last time.
At Hero Harbor we know how independent and self-sufficient you are. We understand that you want to find a new normal where you pursue your dreams, provide for your family and find a way to pay it forward without giving up your sense of autonomy.
That’s why we refer to Hero Harbor communities as transitional. Think of us as a staging area to stow your gear while you gather the resources and tools you need for your next mission.
Volunteer opportunities for this event include staffing a Hero tent, greeting and guiding guests as well as set up and take down of event materials. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the Hero community both military and first responder, get a better understanding of what it means to be an American and embrace the saying "Freedom isn't free"

This is a fundraiser for United Way of Southwest Louisiana in Lake Charles, La. Funds are used in human services programs in a five parish area. Southwest Louisiana includes the parishes of Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis. 50% of the population live below the threshold where basic necessities are a daily struggle. Our helpline's top three calls are for utilities, shelter and food. Before the direct hits from Hurricane Laura on August 27 and Hurricane Delta on October 9 devastated the community, United Way of Southwest Louisiana's pandemic response had served over 245,000 community members. Denise Durel, president and CEO, and her experienced team's quick response had allowed families to stay in their homes and keep food on their tables. Still, they all now shared in a new threat.
Fifty percent of Southwest Louisiana lives in a tenuous month-to-month financial situation that makes preparation for hurricane season and even evacuation difficult or impossible. Denise Durel and her team were busy filling buses with evacuees, answering calls and posting the latest news on social media. By August 28th, they had the first relief supply center running. They were distributing donated diesel to fuel vehicles and generators. Their photography was the first many evacuees were seeing online.
The Hurricane Relief Center, run by Durel's team under a tent in a church parking lot, served 378,114 hurricane victims before closing in November. United Way of Southwest Louisiana served Thanksgiving and Christmas meals by the thousands and gave out over 7,250 toys to children during the holiday season.
The new year brought hope, even without a federal supplemental disaster aid package for Southwest Louisiana. Denise Durel and her team supplied over 180 tons of brand new furniture donated by a major online retailer to working families sleeping on air mattresses. February brought winter storm Uri, and recent storms have exacerbated that damage until some residents are on the third round of gutting their home. Southwest Louisiana has now endured five federally declared natural disasters in ten months.
United Way of Southwest Louisiana is leading the charge to rebuild and recover with multiple avenues of attack. Community members needing assistance use the 211 information and referral line to request help with anything from debris removal, childcare or utility bills.
United Way of Southwest Louisiana, with Denise Durel at the helm, coordinates incoming volunteer groups, giving them access to case-worked residents needing aid. This professional division of efforts ensures communication between all agencies. The most significant need is gutting of sheetrock, removing flooring, debris from yards and hauling of large trees.
The other focus of Durel's team is assisting homeowners with FEMA Appeals. United Way volunteers help respond to an assortment of requests from the federal agency, easing many homeowners' anxiety, some without access to fax or email. Homeowners call 211 to request an appointment.
Mental health for local community members after all of the trauma is something United Way of Southwest Louisiana is pushing to the forefront of every discussion. The storms added a layer to the pandemic, and anxiety or depression has become common. United Way has many ways to offer free help between online Crisis Chat, Teen Texting, 211 call transfers or a funded partner agency.
As hurricane season kicks off this week, Denise Durel's United Way of Southwest Louisiana prepares once again by prepping the building damaged by hurricanes, winter storms and recent flooding. All equipment is secured and air mattresses have been ordered. The fear is not for themselves but the unrepaired homes local families are living in. Many families fear they have been forgotten.
Any individual, group, nonprofit or business with time, materials or a financial gift to offer can contact United Way of Southwest Louisiana. There is no gift too small. The collective impact from all of us will drive the rebuilding process and give hope to those struggling.
