Volunteers needed to help run 50/50, balloon pop station, raffle basket ticket sales, table runners, and round judges.ORPA is a small organization of parents and mentors formed to support the Oakville Robotics team. We are hosting our first fundraiser, a trivia night! Because this is the first event, the parents and sponsors will also have tables for the event. Having volunteers will allow mentors and parents to participate in trivia with their family, friends, guests, and supporters.
Our goal is to raise 50K, and fully fund the 2023 Robotics competition season. Part of the 50K budget includes an enclosed trailer that will be utilized for future competition seasons.

Are special skills needed? No special skills are needed. Our judge panels typically have a mixture of veterans and novice judges. 90% of what happens in judging is not dependent on any particular knowledge or personal skill of the judges
What? This is an all day Saturday volunteer opportunity. Judges are expected to do 1 to 2 hours of preparation-online. There is usually a short online conference call the week before the tournament.
What happens during the day? Judges will meet with two or three other judges in the morning and then interview five or six teams using a rubric to assess the teams for seven different awards. After the initial interviews, judges get together with the larger group and discuss their findings and how the teams rank in the seven different categories. Judges are then reassigned to one of those categories, based on their personal skills, and the top ranked teams are re-interviewed.
Comments from judges? As a first-time judge, participant, and observer of a FIRST competition, I can attest, without hesitation, to having experienced each of the latter. You owe it to the young minds that depend upon you, in addition to yourself, to embrace this opportunity to make a difference and to play it forward - the progress of the World will not wait, nor should you.”
I was blown away by the motivation, effort and ingenuity that these kids demonstrated through their presentations, engineering notebooks and robots. It's a great opportunity to serve as a volunteer judge and encourage these kids in their pursuit of STEM related activities."

As a tournament judge you can directly facilitate the tournament experience for new debaters, whether or not you have prior debate or judging experience. If you can bring professionalism, positivity, and respect then you can be a great judge. Every volunteer judge allows for 4 more students to participate.Judges watch the debate round, evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. They pick a winner and assign speaking points to individual students and provide written and oral feedback on their decision. At a debate tournament, each debate round is approximately 1.5 hours with approximately 10 minutes between rounds. Each tournament will host a minimum of 3 rounds, but may expand to accommodate student entry.
The time commitment varies and you can judge some, or all, of the rounds. We will work with you to be flexible with your schedule, as you are doing a great service for the students in our program. Each new judge volunteer will be trained (approximately two hours) in advance of a tournament. You will learn about the norms of high school debate, including debate evaluation, the style of the activity, and how to make effective and informed decisions.
Two rounds, novice focused, dinner provided!
