For the past decade and half, climate change and extreme weather patterns have become the routine and unpredictability of weather has led to crop failure in most of the cases. Diverse indigenous varieties of seeds are highly suited to local extreme weather conditions thereby providing an insurance against sudden weather extremes due to climate change. Indigenous seeds which are locally adapted lead to better resilience in agriculture than introduced varieties.

Small farmers are the main providers of food and nutritional security of the nation and most of them are under rain fed conditions, but have limited access to technology, input, capital, credit and markets and have low marketable surplus and profits and suffer from multiple deprivation. These small farmers are highly vulnerable to shocks due to climate change in their livelihoods. This project will focus on strengthening the livelihoods of small farmers by contributing to enhancing the resilience of their livelihoods in the context of impacts due to climate changes. The emphasis will be on diversification through indigenous seeds, increase in yield and cost reduction.

The forest of northern Western Ghats has faced many years of degradation, mainly due to cultivation of crops on the mountain slopes by clearing forest patches and logging for sale of firewood. Although this practice has been halted in the recent years, there is an urgent need to restore the biodiversity and regenerate the lost forests. Additionally, many communities are still dependant on the forests for cattle grazing and firewood for Chulha, despite having LPG connections which puts additional stress on the forests. There are lack of alternative to slash and burn agriculture, requirement of wood for cooking and absence of incentives for sustainable resource-use amongst forest dependant community. This sort of destructive use of resources has resulted in loss of biodiversity which makes it imperative to initiate work focusing on restoration of degraded lands for water security, biodiversity conservation and alternative livelihoods in these hamlets.
The volunteers can work on the ground towards this cause by participating in ecological, social and economic surveys in the forests and hamlets. They can also help in plantation of native plant species in the degraded forest lands. They can help distribute solar lamps and bio-stoves to the local community members.

As the world becomes a smaller place, travel and tourism is only set to increase year after year. With it, the number of people becoming conscious of their carbon footprint is also increasing with the kind of environmental awareness that is growing globally. A typical young traveller would like to have non-complicated ways of offsetting his/her carbon footprint and be completely informed and ensured that their contribution reaches the most efficient mechanism to compensate for their carbon emissions. We have that mechanism in the form of the 'My Forest' programme through which one can save the forests of the Western Ghats which are a global biodiversity hotspot.
We would like the volunteers to help us create the other mechanism - that is to help the traveller offset their carbon footprint by contributing to the 'My Forest' programme through various travel portals. They would also need to develop a carbon calculator.

In 2018, Sacramento was named the ""the Most Polluted City on Earth"" due to ""smoke from Camp Fire,"" This proposal aims to prevent that from happening again through adopting a systemic approach and collaborating with stakeholders to actively prevent future such events. The insurance industry, along with institutional chief risk officers, have begun to recognize the importance of moving from ""loss compensation to loss prevention.""

CrowdDoing and Project Heather propose launching a prevention derivative with two new stakeholders: (a) contingent payers who pay in proportion to the reduction in risk, and (b) impact investors who finance social innovations in which their return is similarly proportional to the reduction in risk. It will build on existing precedents for contingent contracts involving social- innovation-based risk prevention.

Forest Fire Prevention Derivatives, CrowdDoing, Volunteer Insurance Underwriter
A spectrum of forest fire risk prevention approaches are available: from creative new social innovations to well-established interventions. The forest fire risk prevention derivative would first survey existing forest fire prevention interventions in Greater Sacramento with an eye towards which ones might be suitable to support and expand. It would then review global social innovations that might be relevant to Northern California to determine which to replicate. Entities involved in risk management and risk securitisation, from insurers to reinsurers to retrocessionaires, ought to welcome the chance to share liability proportionally through a commons of prevention innovations. The prevention derivative can expand as more institutions and individuals join as contingent payers and impact investors in order prevent a larger portion of collective risk. Payments by private and public institutions to support prevention derivatives can be in-kind, through services, and/or financial
