Teaching of basic fundamentals to an Unprivileged Community Students, for whom we have started our free tuition centre in May 2024.

Here are the project details:
In December 2023 and January 2024, we observed children begging at a temple in KondaGattu and decided to investigate their situation further. Our inquiries with the local police revealed that these families have a long history of dependency on begging, and the current generation of children is following the same path. While some of these children were enrolled in school, many were irregular and struggled with basic literacy, despite being in the 7th or 8th grades. They often beg near temples and other village locations and are largely isolated from their peers. The community's perception of these families is also negative.
Recognizing the need for change, we aimed to improve their educational prospects and break the cycle of begging. We believe that raising awareness among their parents about the importance of education and enrolling the children in a private school could be a key solution. By integrating them into a school environment with other local children, we hope to inspire positive changes in both the parents' attitudes and the children's perspectives. Over time, this exposure to education and different social dynamics should help shift their mindset away from begging and towards valuing education as a pathway to a better future.
As a result, we launched a tuition center on May 1, 2024, starting with 30 children, which has since grown to over 60. We hired two tutors to provide fundamental education initially and later continued to assist with their current academics. To encourage attendance, we also offer daily snacks and fruits.
Initially, the children behaved in a way that resembled begging when receiving snacks, but within a short period, they began to adjust and act more normally.
By mid-June 2024, after operating for about a month and a half, we identified seven who have shown keen interest towards education and have been regular to the tuition centre. We enrolled all these seven students in Sree Vagdevi High School in Malyala, by paying their school fees, transportation, uniforms, shoes, and books, totaling over 2 lakhs for this academic year.
The decision to enrol students in a private school has significantly impacted their behaviour, communication, hygiene, and academic interest. Additionally, it has served as a motivating factor for those attending government schools, as they see that consistent effort and good performance in tuition can lead to the opportunity to join a private school as well.
Our goal is to integrate the remaining 50 plus children into private schools over the coming years and support them through to the completion of 10th grade which will cost approximately 15 lakhs per year for their academics and to run the tuition centre covering the salaries for tutors and stationery to the kids.

**Why Choose Private School:**

Many children attending government schools struggle with basic literacy, lack fundamental knowledge, and exhibit poor behaviour, communication skills, and hygiene. Additionally, their parents often encourage or force them to beg, even on school days. As a solution, we decided to enrol at least a few of these children in private schools this year. We believe that, after a few months of interacting with other students, they will be less inclined to beg, even if pressured. Wearing uniforms, school shoes, and riding the school bus, alongside the positive changes in their behaviour and communication, will likely influence their parents' mindset and show them that their children are moving towards a better education.
This will also become a motivation factor to all kids in their community those attending government schools, as they see that consistent effort and good performance in tuition can lead to the opportunity to join a private school as well.

Currently the tuition Centre is running daily evening 5.45pm to 7.30pm and also on school holidays morning 10 am to 3.30pm

Volunteers are essential to the delivery of SitStayRead programs and our ability to impact more students. Whether you want to volunteer solo, with your dog, or as part of a group, there are several ways to make a difference.

Please note that SitStayRead only serves young Chicago students. Our current priority neighborhoods are Archer Heights, Auburn Gresham, Belmont Central, Gage Park, Galewood, Little Village, Pilsen, and South Austin. We prioritize Chicago Public Schools when possible, and offer fee-based Family Literacy Events to a wider range of Chicago organizations.

In 2024-25 SitStayRead begins a new partnership with the Chicago Public Libraries. SitStayRead will provide one-off intergenerational Family LIteracy Events after school in local branches who are part of the Jump Into Reading initiative, with a focus on K-2nd grade level readers, regardless of age, and their adult family members. Teens and other children are welcome to attend, and we expect many to be staffed with bilingual Program Staff and volunteers. Stay tuned for more information, but sign up now!

You and your certified reading assistance dog provide some of the most unique and valuable components of our programs. Dog - human teams meet with students in the classroom only after the students have had an introduction to dog safety and preparation for these special visits by our Program Managers.

During each one-hour visit, dog teams welcome students to read aloud with confidence, while also building trust in and experiencing the benefits of proximity to a calm, live animal.

Prospective Dog Teams must attend orientation and pass a dog certification and human background check before being invited to join a class or Family Literacy Event. All Prospective Dog Teams first go through Book Buddy training and are certified as Book Buddy Volunteers (humans) before adding your dog team member and going through the Dog Team certification process!

This means our Dog Teams are amazing assets who can fill more than one role!

Learn more about what makes a good candidate for our Dog Team volunteers below. If you have additional questions or would like to start the process of joining SitStayRead with your dog, please email volunteer@sitstayread.org
