Opportunity Details

Philly Bookshelf relies on donations from Seattle area community members to meet the needs of over 90 schools and 16 community groups in low income neighborhoods. We provide about 7,500 books annually. Hosting a Book Drive is the easiest way to help Philly Bookshelf while getting volunteer hours.

You can organize a Book Drive with your team, employee resource group, social group, or in your building. Philly Bookshelf provides a large box with signs and all you have to do is encourage your group to donate new and gently used books. We accept books for all ages – newborn to adult – and in every language. Right now, we especially need books for children and teens. At the end of the book drive, we arrange a time to collect the books from you. This is an easy and fun volunteer activity with an incredible impact. Every book counts!

What is Philly Bookshelf?

Philly Bookshelf is a nonprofit that provides thousands of books annually to schools, community bookshelves, and other programs in low income neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We’ve worked with over 90 schools and 16 community groups to get books to those who need them most. Only about 12 of the approximately 220 public schools in Philadelphia have librarians. We help fill the gap by supporting teacher, student, and volunteer run school libraries as well as providing books to teachers for classroom libraries.

Optional: If you would like additional volunteer hours, we can provide our spreadsheet and a barcode scanner for you and/or your team members to enter the books into a specialized Excel spreadsheet that we import to our database.

Help assemble books for our Date with a Book program. Using the materials provided, volunteers will wrap books and creatively decorate the covers with clues hinting at what the title might be. It’s a fun activity with the opportunity to be as creative with the decorating as volunteers like! All levels of artistic skill are welcome.

What is Date with a Book? A popular trend where books are wrapped to cover the title and author, but clues are written on the outside to indicate genre, age appropriateness, etc., and community members make a selection without judging a book by its cover. Philly Bookshelf provides these books to Community Bookshelves and programs in low income neighborhoods that would not otherwise be able to participate in a program like this.

Bookplate stickers come in rolls of 1,000 and need to be rolled out and cut into strips of 12 stickers. The end result of this volunteer activity is bookplates that are easy for Page Ahead to ship to hundreds of schools in Washington State for teachers to distribute to their students for our spring book fairs. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a student's educational journey by volunteering in a classroom. You will help students with reading and/or math in small groups or one on one. The goal is to get as many people who are passionate as we are to come and assist our students in becoming fluent in math facts, parts of speech, comprehension, and decoding. COVID-19 has played a major part in the achievement gap of our students. It is important for us and the future of all that we close this gap as much as possible.
