Assist us in our Teaching Gardens! These gardens help us offer engaging, hands-on learning for school children on field trips, teenagers working in our Deep Roots program, and visitors to our Farmer's Market.

This month's project is: Winterize the Garden
We'll be building row covers so that we can easily cover plants for the first frost. We will also harvest loofahs, squash, and melons ahead of the first frost and talk about steps you can take to protect tender perennials over the winter.

We'll be working on planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and special projects. No experience required. For this project, volunteers should be able to bend and stoop to the ground for planting. Please dress for the weather, and consider a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray. Bring your own garden gloves, if you have them; if you do not bring them, garden gloves will be provided.

This will be our biggest planting day of the fall! We will be planting kale, spinach, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and more!

Clean up the summer plans that are done and compost biomass. We will then plant early fall garden plants and talk about what you can grow in Texas over the Winter!

Come harvest tomatoes, peppers, basil, and eggplant. We will also be doing some trellising and general garden maintenance such as touching up sheet mulch. During the height of summer we ant to trap the moisture and help keep plants cool!

help us start our pumpkin patch so they’ll be ready for Halloween! We’ll pull back sheet mulch, prepare mounds, and plant pumpkin seeds. We will also plant other squash/gourds.

Learn how to build a simple trellis for a row crop of tomatoes. Then prepare soil, build mounds and plant peanuts! We will also continue our 3 sisters companion planting by adding Pole Beans to the mounds we made in April.

This month's project is: 3 Sisters Companion Planting and Building Mounds
Help us build mounds and plant several corn varieties for our 3 sisters demonstration (corns, bean, squash). We will discuss the benefits of companion planting, and will demonstrate a technique used by Native Americans. If we have time, we’ll also plant Texas Black Amber Molasses and talk about its history in the region (and on Herff Farm!).

Opportunity Details

We celebrate , educate, and engage the community in stewardship of our Earth. Free education sessions are held throughout the day. We host a Kids Zone for arts and crafts. Vendors will be present with all your Earth Related education and items for purchase. Seed2Seed will be giving free tours of our Sustainable Education farm. Food will be available for purchase as well.

Opportunity Details

We are seeking individuals that are friendly and want to help on a sporadic basis. We offer a variety of special events throughout the year and often need help with set-up, break-down and conducting the event itself.
